Niek Vanoosterweyck – The Masseur

In the summer of 2019, I travelled to Lissabon, Portugal to take an Ayurvedic Massage course. The teacher, Atul Mulji, has been massaging and teaching yoga in India, Portugal and The Netherlands.

The teachings took place in the back of a vegetarian restaurant (Jardim dos Sentidos) with the most amazing buffet for the lunch breaks. After 40 hours I completed the course and I can call myself an ayurvedic masseur.

Ayurveda massage is a part of Ayurvedic medicine. It is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India.

Ayurveda massage is a full-body massage. Which involves working with pressure points and meridians on the hands, feet, legs, back, stomach, neck and shoulders. The massage technique uses strong fingers and palms combined with gentle movements.
In this way, energy blockages and stress are released.
The result is a lightened body, loose skin and the stripping of all stress.
Ayurveda massage is only done with natural oils. The usage of the oil depends on your body, outside temperature and personal preferences.

A session

On arrival, we’ll have a short conversation on any specific complains, mental state and the usage of oils.
After the massage, a glass of water or tea will be offered. This is recommended so that the released waste can be properly disposed of. Because I am a beginner I will ask for feedback and or recommendations.

Ayurveda Massage is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments may be geared toward specific health problems.
It offers, among others, these main benefits:

Improved blood circulation.
Provides smoother muscles.
Reduces stress.
Helps against depression.
Purifies the body because waste products will remove themselves faster.
